Empusae are a type of monstrous female spirit or demon in Greek mythology. They are often described as beautiful and seductive creatures that lure young men to their deaths. The name "empousa" is thought to derive from the Greek word "empous," meaning "one foot" or "one-footed."

Descriptions of empusae vary across different myths and accounts. Some sources depict them with one leg made of donkey bone and the other of brass, while others describe them as having a single, fiery eye. Their appearance could also change, shifting from beautiful women to terrifying monsters with dog-like features, a horse's tail, and a gaping mouth filled with fangs.

The empusae were believed to be servants of the goddess Hecate, who was associated with witchcraft, ghosts, and the underworld. Their primary purpose was to seduce and drain the life force from unsuspecting mortals. They would often appear in lonely places, such as crossroads or desolate paths, to ensnare their victims. Once lured, the empusae would either consume the young men or drain their blood, leaving them dead.
