Emphasizers are linguistic elements that heighten the perceived strength, certainty, or prominence of a word, phrase, or whole clause. They include a variety of devices such as degree modifiers (intensifiers), focus or scope markers (only, even), and discourse or stance markers (frankly, honestly). While the term is not universal in all grammars, it is used to describe items that add emphasis beyond the literal content of a statement.

In English, common emphasizers include intensifiers like very, extremely, and so; boosters such as absolutely and utterly; and restrictive focus words like only and even. They typically precede the term they modify (a very large problem) or, in some cases, apply to the entire clause (I am totally sure). Some emphasizers also convey the speaker’s stance and can function as discourse markers (Frankly, I must admit). They can affect tone, intensity, and perceived certainty, and their placement can influence scope and emphasis within a sentence.

Cross-linguistic variation is wide. Many languages have their own emphasizers, including adverbs, particles, or affixes that express degree or focus. Examples include Spanish muy and bastante, Mandarin hen or tai, and a variety of language-specific particles. The use of emphasizers interacts with formality, politeness, and conversational effect; overuse can appear exaggerated or insincere, while strategic use can clarify emphasis, mood, or stance in both spoken and written registers.
