Embriótranszfer is the final step in in vitro fertilization (IVF) where one or more embryos are placed into a woman's uterus or fallopian tube. This procedure aims to achieve a pregnancy. After eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory, the resulting embryos are cultured for several days. The embryologist then selects the best quality embryo or embryos for transfer.

The transfer itself is a relatively simple and usually painless procedure. A speculum is inserted to visualize the cervix, and a thin, flexible catheter containing the embryo(s) is guided through the cervix into the uterine cavity. The embryo(s) are then gently deposited. The number of embryos transferred is a crucial decision, influenced by factors such as the woman's age, embryo quality, and previous IVF cycles, with the goal of maximizing pregnancy rates while minimizing the risk of multiple pregnancies.

Following the embryo transfer, the patient typically rests for a short period before resuming normal activities, though strenuous exercise and sexual intercourse are often advised to be avoided for a few days. A blood test to confirm pregnancy is usually performed about two weeks after the transfer. Success rates for embryo transfer vary depending on numerous factors, including the clinic's expertise, the patient's age and reproductive health, and the quality of the embryos.
