The expression is used in sociology, public health, marketing, and everyday discourse to discuss how people live and what drives those differences.

Lifestyles are shaped by a combination of individual choices and structural factors. Personal resources such as income and education interact with culture, gender, age, geography, and policy environments to influence what is feasible or attractive. Globalization and digital media spread ideas about health, success, and consumption, leading to a variety of lifestyle paths. Common categories used in analysis include healthy, sustainable, traditional, urban, rural, or consumer-oriented lifestyles, among others.

In research and policy, lifestyle is often measured by indicators such as diet quality, physical activity, tobacco and alcohol use, sleep, stress, social connections, and environmental footprint. The concept helps explain differences in health outcomes and the impact of interventions, but scholars emphasize the interplay between agency and circumstance and warn against blaming individuals for broader structural issues.

In Nordic contexts, including Finland, there is a focus on balanced living, preventive health, and ecological sustainability within lifestyle discussions. Policies aim to improve access to nutritious food, safe housing, and opportunities for physical activity, as well as to support diverse life paths through inclusive urban planning, transportation, and social services.
