Elektrotermikus refers to phenomena or devices that involve the interplay of electrical and thermal energy. This broad term encompasses various processes where electricity is converted into heat, or where heat influences electrical properties or behavior.

One common example is resistive heating, where an electric current flows through a conductor with resistance, generating heat according to Joule's law. This principle is utilized in many everyday appliances, such as toasters, electric heaters, and incandescent light bulbs. In these applications, electrical energy is intentionally dissipated as thermal energy to achieve a desired outcome, like cooking food or providing warmth.

Conversely, thermoelectric effects describe the direct conversion between thermal and electrical energy. The Seebeck effect, for instance, states that a temperature difference across a thermoelectric material generates an electric voltage. This is the basis for thermoelectric generators, which can convert waste heat into electricity. The Peltier effect is the inverse, where an electric current passed through a junction of two dissimilar conductors causes heat to be absorbed or released, enabling cooling or heating. This is used in small refrigerators and cooling devices.
