Elektrosvage is a term used in theoretical physics to describe the electroweak interaction, one of the four fundamental forces of nature. It is a unification of the electromagnetic force and the weak nuclear force, which were previously understood as separate phenomena. This unification was a significant achievement in particle physics, providing a consistent framework for understanding the behavior of elementary particles.

The electroweak theory was developed by physicists including Sheldon Glashow, Abdus Salam, and Steven Weinberg, who were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1979 for their work. The theory posits that at high energies, such as those present in the early universe or in particle accelerators, the electromagnetic and weak forces are indistinguishable. They manifest as a single, unified electroweak force. As the universe cooled and energies decreased, this unified force separated into the distinct electromagnetic and weak forces we observe today.

The mediators of the electroweak force are known as gauge bosons. The electromagnetic force is mediated by the photon, while the weak force is mediated by the W and Z bosons. The W and Z bosons are massive particles, which is why the weak force has a very short range compared to the infinite range of the electromagnetic force mediated by the massless photon. Experimental verification of the existence of the W and Z bosons at CERN in the 1980s provided strong evidence for the validity of the electroweak theory. This theory is a crucial component of the Standard Model of particle physics.
