Elektronegativitását is a chemical property that measures the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons. This attraction is not uniform across all elements and varies significantly depending on the element's position in the periodic table. Generally, electronegativity increases as you move from left to right across a period and decreases as you move down a group.

The concept of electronegativity was first quantified by Linus Pauling, who developed a relative scale based on bond energies. Other scales, such as the Mulliken and Allred-Rochow scales, exist and provide similar, though not identical, values. Fluorine is the most electronegative element, followed by oxygen, chlorine, and nitrogen. Alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, located on the left side of the periodic table, have very low electronegativity values.

The difference in electronegativity between two bonded atoms is a crucial factor in determining the type of chemical bond formed. A large difference typically results in an ionic bond, where electrons are essentially transferred from the less electronegative atom to the more electronegative one, creating charged ions. A smaller difference leads to a polar covalent bond, where electrons are shared unequally, creating partial positive and negative charges on the atoms. If the electronegativity difference is negligible, a nonpolar covalent bond is formed, where electrons are shared almost equally. Understanding electronegativity helps predict molecular polarity and reactivity.
