Elektromobilok is a term used to describe electric mobility and the vehicles and systems that enable it. It encompasses passenger cars, buses, trucks, two- and three-wheeled vehicles, as well as associated charging infrastructure, energy storage, and control electronics.

The concept has roots in the late 19th century, with early electric vehicles competing with internal combustion engines. After mid-20th century decline, demand surged again in the 2010s due to advances in lithium-ion batteries, increasing energy density, and supportive policies.

Core technologies include electric propulsion motors, high-capacity rechargeable batteries, power electronics, and thermal management. Vehicle types include battery electric vehicles (BEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), and, in some contexts, fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEV).

Charging infrastructure ranges from home AC charging to public slow and fast DC networks. Common connectors and standards vary by region but include Type 2 (Mennekes) and DC fast charging formats such as CCS, CHAdeMO, and in some markets Tesla. Grid integration and demand management are ongoing concerns.

Markets are growing in Europe, China, and North America, driven by emissions policies, urban air quality goals, and lower operating costs. Policies often include subsidies, tax incentives, vehicle purchase mandates, and investment in charging networks.

Environmental considerations include zero tailpipe emissions but lifecycle impacts from manufacturing and battery recycling. End-of-life reuse and second-life applications for large batteries are developing.
