Elektromagnetlained are oscillations of electric and magnetic fields that propagate through space. They do not require a material medium and can travel through vacuum. The waves arise from changing electric charges and are described by Maxwell's equations, which predict their speed and behavior.

In vacuum, elektromagnetlained travel at the speed of light, c, about 299,792 kilometers per second. They are transverse waves: the electric and magnetic fields oscillate perpendicularly to the direction of travel and to each other. They carry energy and momentum, which can be quantized into photons with energy E = hν, where ν is the frequency and h is Planck's constant.

The electromagnetic spectrum spans a broad range of frequencies and wavelengths, from radio waves with long wavelengths to gamma rays with very short wavelengths. Common categories include radio, microwave, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays.
