Elektrofiilisest refers to electrophilicity, a concept in chemistry describing the tendency of a chemical species to attract and bind with electrons. An electrophile, meaning "electron-loving," is a reagent that is deficient in electrons and therefore seeks out electron-rich centers in other molecules. This attraction is driven by electrostatic forces, as the positively charged or partially positive region of the electrophile is drawn to the negatively charged or electron-rich region of another molecule, known as a nucleophile.

Electrophiles are typically positively charged ions, neutral molecules with a polar double or triple bond, or molecules with an incomplete octet of valence electrons. The interaction between an electrophile and a nucleophile is a fundamental process in organic chemistry, forming the basis of many important reactions, including electrophilic addition, electrophilic substitution, and electrophilic aromatic substitution. In these reactions, the electrophile typically attacks the most electron-rich site of the nucleophile, leading to the formation of a new covalent bond and often the displacement of another group.
