Electrodegenerated is an adjective used in electrochemistry and related fields to describe species, films, or phenomena that originate at an electrode during an electrochemical process. It refers to entities produced directly by electron transfer at the electrode surface, or by reactions initiated at the surface under an applied potential, rather than by bulk-phase chemistry.

In practice, electrodegenerated species include reactive intermediates such as radical cations or anions formed by oxidation or reduction at the electrode; gaseous products evolved during electrolysis (for example hydrogen or oxygen); and surface-bound films or deposits created by electrode reactions. The rate and nature of electrodegeneration depend on the electrode material and structure, the applied potential, supporting electrolyte, and mass-transport conditions.

Applications include the synthesis of chemicals through electrochemical routes, generation of species for analytical detection (for example electrogenerated chemiluminescence, ECL), and electrochemical sensors where selectivity arises from electrodegenerated intermediates. In corrosion science, electrodegenerated species influence passivation and localized corrosion. Electrodegeneration is distinct from electrodeposition, which produces materials deposited onto an electrode, and from simply dissolving material; electrodegenerated refers specifically to processes occurring at the interface.
