Elastase is a serine protease primarily produced and secreted by neutrophils, a type of white blood cell involved in the immune response. The enzyme plays a critical role in breaking down extracellular matrix components, particularly elastin, a protein essential for maintaining the elasticity of tissues like the lungs and blood vessels.

Human neutrophil elastase is encoded by the *ELANE* gene and exists in multiple forms, including elastáz1, which is characterized by its distinct amino acid sequence and functional properties.
