ELANE

ELANE, also known as Elafin, is a protein encoded by the ELANE gene in humans. It belongs to the serine protease inhibitor family, specifically a Kunitz-type inhibitor. ELANE plays a crucial role in the innate immune system, primarily acting as an antimicrobial peptide. It is found in various tissues, with particularly high concentrations in neutrophils and epithelial cells.

The main function of ELANE is to inhibit elastase, a neutrophil-derived serine protease. Elastase is involved in breaking down extracellular matrix proteins and can also contribute to inflammation and tissue damage. By inhibiting elastase, ELANE helps to regulate inflammatory responses and protect host tissues from excessive protease activity.

Beyond its role in elastase inhibition, ELANE exhibits direct antimicrobial activity against a range of bacteria and fungi. It is believed to disrupt bacterial cell membranes, leading to cell death. This dual function makes ELANE a significant component of the body's defense mechanisms against infection. Mutations in the ELANE gene are associated with certain autoimmune diseases and chronic inflammatory conditions, highlighting its importance in maintaining immune homeostasis.
