eläytyä

Eläytyä is a Finnish verb meaning to immerse oneself in a feeling, mood, or situation, or to identify with another person's experiences. The term is used both in emotional and imaginative contexts: a listener or reader may empathize with someone else's circumstances, or a performer may become absorbed in a character or the atmosphere of a scene.

Usage: In the emotional sense, eläytyminen describes empathic engagement, for example “eläydyin tarinaan” (I became absorbed in the story) or “eläytyä toisen asemaan” (to put oneself in someone else’s position). In performing or imaginative contexts, it indicates deliberate immersion: “näyttelijä eläytyy rooliinsa” (the actor immerses himself in the role). The verb often governs illative forms such as tarinaan, rooliin, or maailmaan to indicate what one is immersed in.
