ektodermist

An ektodermist is a term used to describe a scientist who studies the ectoderm, the outermost of the three primary germ layers formed during early embryonic development. The word is not commonly used in English; more typical labels include ectoderm researcher or ectodermal biologist. The term may be encountered in non-English contexts where “ektoderm” is the local term for ectoderm.

The ectoderm gives rise to the epidermis and its derivatives, the nervous system (brain and spinal cord), sensory organs such as the eyes and ears, and various ectodermal appendages including hair, nails, and tooth enamel. A researcher in this field investigates how ectodermal cells are specified during gastrulation, how neural and epidermal fates are chosen, and how signaling networks control these processes.
