Extremophiles are organisms that thrive in physically or geochemically extreme conditions that are detrimental to most life on Earth. These environments can include extreme temperatures, high pressure, high acidity, alkalinity, salinity, and high concentrations of heavy metals. Extremophiles are classified based on the extreme conditions they inhabit. These organisms possess unique biochemical and physiological adaptations that allow them to survive and reproduce in their harsh habitats. These adaptations often involve specialized enzymes, proteins, and cell membranes that remain functional under extreme conditions. Studying extremophiles not only reveals the diversity of life on Earth but also provides potential biotechnological applications, such as enzymes that can function at high temperatures or in extreme pH, useful in industrial processes.
