Ekonómia is the Slovak term that encompasses both the economy of a country and the social science that studies how scarce resources are allocated to satisfy human needs. It covers the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services and analyzes the interactions among households, firms, governments, and foreign sectors.

Etymology traces the word to the Greek oikos, meaning house, and nomos, meaning law or management. The field is typically divided into microeconomics, which examines individual choices and firm behavior, and macroeconomics, which considers aggregate phenomena such as inflation, unemployment, and economic growth. Subfields include public finance, monetary economics, international trade, development economics, labor economics, and environmental economics.

Historically, modern ekonómia developed in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries with contributions from figures such as Adam Smith, David Ricardo, and Karl Marx. The later 19th and 20th centuries saw the marginalist revolution, neoclassical synthesis, and the rise of econometrics, which expanded the use of quantitative methods to test theories and inform policy.

Methods and indicators: economists use theoretical models, data analysis, and statistical techniques to study choices and outcomes. Key indicators include gross domestic product, inflation, unemployment, government debt, and balance of payments. Policy tools include fiscal policy, monetary policy, regulation, and trade agreements, supported by institutions such as central banks, finance ministries, and statistical offices.

Contemporary ekonómia informs public policy, business strategy, and international affairs, while ongoing debates address efficiency versus equity, growth and stability, sustainability, and the management of risks such as financial crises and environmental change.
