eiporoittinen

Eiporiittinen is a term used in Finnish to describe something that is extramarital or out of wedlock. It is often used in a historical context to refer to children born outside of a formal marriage, as well as their parents. In the past, being eiporiittinen often carried social stigma, particularly for women, who were often held accountable for the reproductive choices of their partners.

During the Christianization of Finland, the church condemned eiporiittinen relationships and offspring. Many Finns converted to Christianity in the 12th century, and the influence of Catholicism and later Lutheranism brought a strong emphasis on traditional Christian family values.
