Effektory, in English commonly referred to as effectors, are secreted molecules produced by many microbial pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, and oomycetes. They are deployed to manipulate the physiology of the host cell to promote infection and colonization. In some languages the plural form is effektory or effektory, reflecting the same biological concept.

Most effektory proteins are delivered directly into host cells by specialized secretion systems. In bacteria, this frequently involves Type III, Type IV, or Type VI secretion systems; in fungi and oomycetes, effectors are secreted via conventional pathways and specialized translocation mechanisms. Some effectors act outside the cell, while others function inside the nucleus, cytoplasm, or at the plasma membrane.

Effektory exert their effects by targeting key host processes. They can modify signaling pathways, immune responses, vesicle trafficking, and cytoskeletal dynamics; some function as enzymes (for example, ubiquitin ligases, phosphatases, or nucleases), while others mimic host proteins to disrupt normal regulation. A major theme is suppression or evasion of host defenses, though some effectors can trigger immune responses that lead to pathogen recognition by host resistance proteins.

In plant-pathogen systems, effectors are central to compatibility and resistance. Plants may recognize specific effektory and activate effector-triggered immunity, driving an arms race that shapes pathogen evolution. The study of effektory has practical implications for agriculture, including the development of resistant crop varieties and targeted disease management.
