Edge computing, or edge environment, refers to a distributed computing paradigm that brings computation and data storage closer to the sources of data. This is done in contrast to traditional cloud computing, where data is processed and stored in centralized data centers. The primary motivation behind edge computing is to reduce latency, conserve bandwidth, and improve the reliability of applications. By processing data at or near the "edge" of the network, closer to where it is generated by devices like sensors, smartphones, or IoT devices, the time it takes for data to travel to a central server and back is significantly decreased.

This proximity allows for faster decision-making and real-time processing, which is crucial for applications such as autonomous vehicles, industrial automation, augmented reality, and remote patient monitoring. Edge environments can encompass a wide range of hardware, from small embedded devices and gateways to micro data centers located at cell towers or local facilities. The data processed at the edge can be filtered, aggregated, or analyzed locally, with only the most critical information being sent to the cloud for further analysis or long-term storage.
