Echocardiography, often called an echocardiogram or simply an echo, is a medical diagnostic technique that uses ultrasound waves to create images of the heart. It is a non-invasive procedure that allows doctors to visualize the heart's structure and function in real-time. This imaging method utilizes a transducer, a device that emits and receives sound waves, which is placed on the chest over the heart. These sound waves travel through the body, bounce off the heart's tissues, and return to the transducer. The returning echoes are then processed by a computer to generate moving images of the heart chambers, valves, and walls.

Echocardiography provides valuable information about the size and shape of the heart, the thickness of its walls, and the pumping strength of its chambers. It can effectively assess the function of the heart valves, detecting any narrowing (stenosis) or leakage (regurgitation). Furthermore, echocardiography can identify abnormalities such as congenital heart defects, blood clots, fluid accumulation around the heart (pericardial effusion), and damage to the heart muscle caused by conditions like heart attack. Various types of echocardiography exist, including transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), which is the standard external ultrasound, and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), where the transducer is guided down the esophagus for a closer view of the heart. Doppler echocardiography is another common technique used to measure the speed and direction of blood flow within the heart. Echocardiography is a crucial tool for diagnosing and monitoring a wide range of cardiac conditions.
