A later development within the art is metalbending, discovered by Toph Beifong, who learned to bend the earth within metal objects and, in turn, expanded what the discipline can do.

Notable figures associated with earthbending include King Bumi, the wise and unconventional ruler of Omashu, and Toph Beifong, who becomes a master earthbender and innovates metalbending. Lin Beifong, Toph’s daughter, is a prominent metalbender and serves as head of Republic City’s police force. Earthbenders play a central role in many Earth Kingdom cities and are often characterized by resilience and practicality reflected in their architecture and way of life.

Training in earthbending emphasizes grounded stances, low center of gravity, and strong, deliberate movements that draw power from the earth itself.
