eResepti is Finland’s nationwide electronic prescription system, a central element of the country’s Kanta Services for electronic health records. It enables prescribers to issue medications electronically and transmit prescriptions to a central repository, replacing most traditional paper or faxed prescriptions. The system integrates with pharmacies and reimbursement processes, allowing faster dispensing and up-to-date medication information across healthcare settings.

In practice, an eResepti contains patient identifiers, drug name, dosage, quantity, and administration instructions. Once created, the prescription is accessible to pharmacies for dispensing and to the patient through secure online portals, such as My Kanta Pages. Prescriptions can be renewed or continued electronically, and their status can be tracked across different points of care. If a patient changes pharmacies, the prescription remains available to the new dispensing location, subject to the usual authorization rules.

Patient access and privacy are central to eResepti. The contents of a prescription are stored within the national e-health data system and are visible to authorized healthcare professionals. Patients can view their active and historical prescriptions via the patient portal and manage who may access their records within the limits of applicable laws and consent options.

Impact and scope have grown since implementation, with eResepti reducing administrative work, decreasing the risk of misreading instructions, and improving medication safety and coordination among doctors, pharmacists, and pharmacists’ assistants. It is part of Finland’s broader digital health infrastructure designed to streamline care and support reimbursement and auditing processes.
