eIDAS20

eIDAS20 refers to the proposed revisions to the eIDAS Regulation (Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 on electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions in the internal market). The European Commission presented its proposal for amending eIDAS in June 2021, with the aim of modernizing and expanding its scope.

Key aspects of the eIDAS20 proposal include the mandatory availability of digital identity wallets for all citizens, enhanced security and privacy safeguards, and broader applicability of eIDAS trust services, such as electronic signatures and seals, across the EU. It also aims to address new use cases and technologies, including the potential for biometric identification. The intention is to foster a more digitalized and inclusive single market, facilitating cross-border transactions and access to public and private services. The legislative process for eIDAS20 is ongoing, with the European Parliament and the Council of the EU working on the proposed text.
