The size and shape of a dækningsområde depend on the technology used, the operating frequency, transmitter power and placement, network topology, and the physical environment. They can differ for outdoor reception and indoor environments.

In mobile networks, dækningsområder are defined by cells and layers such as macro cells, small cells, and indoor systems. Coverage is typically shown on maps that indicate signal strength or the likelihood of usable service. Maps may cover a single operator’s network or reflect broader service availability, including regulatory obligations to ensure minimum access.

Determining dækningsområder combines measurement and modelling. Real-world data are gathered through drive tests, drive data, and user reports, alongside propagation models such as Okumura–Hata or COST231-Hata, and sometimes ray-tracing analyses in complex urban areas. Factors shaping the results include terrain, building density and material, vegetation, weather, interference, and user equipment characteristics.

Practical considerations include that coverage does not guarantee performance; actual user experience depends on device capability, indoor location, and network load. Operators may extend or improve dækningsområder with additional base stations, distributed antenna systems, repeaters, or small cells, especially to enhance indoor coverage or rural reach.
