Dystrofioille, in Finnish, refers to dystrophies. Dystrophies are a group of inherited muscular disorders characterized by progressive muscle weakness and degeneration. The term "dystrophy" itself comes from the Greek words "dys" meaning "bad" or "difficult" and "trophē" meaning "nourishment," indicating a lack of proper nourishment or development for the muscles.

There are many different types of muscular dystrophies, each affecting different muscle groups and progressing at varying rates. The most common and well-known form is Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which typically affects young boys and leads to severe muscle weakness and loss of mobility. Becker muscular dystrophy is a milder form that also primarily affects males. Other types include myotonic dystrophy, which is characterized by myotonia (delayed muscle relaxation) and progressive muscle wasting, and facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, which affects the muscles of the face, shoulders, and upper arms.

The underlying cause of muscular dystrophies is genetic mutations that disrupt the production of proteins essential for muscle function and structure. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of clinical examination, genetic testing, muscle biopsy, and electromyography. While there is currently no cure for most forms of muscular dystrophy, treatments focus on managing symptoms, maintaining muscle function, and improving quality of life. This can include physical therapy, occupational therapy, medication to manage complications, and orthopedic interventions. Research into gene therapy and other advanced treatments is ongoing with the aim of developing more effective therapies.
