Dye resists are substances or techniques used in dyeing processes to prevent dye from reaching certain areas of the material being colored. This creates patterns or designs by leaving some parts of the fabric or other medium undyed or a different color. The principle behind dye resist is to temporarily block the dye's penetration into the fibers.

There are several common methods for achieving dye resist. One is physical resist, where a physical barrier is applied. Examples include tying off sections of fabric (tie-dye), folding and clamping (shibori), or stitching down areas before dyeing. Another method is chemical resist, where a substance is applied that reacts with the dye, preventing it from fixing. Wax resist, such as in batik, is a prominent example where molten wax is applied to the fabric. The wax solidifies and acts as a barrier; after dyeing, the wax is removed, revealing the resist-ed pattern. Other chemical resists might include clay pastes, specialized chemical solutions, or even sugar pastes that harden and then dissolve. The effectiveness of a resist depends on its ability to create a complete barrier and its compatibility with the dyeing process. Dye resists are widely used in textile art, traditional craft, and industrial dyeing to achieve decorative effects.
