Dyefiber is a term used in textile science to describe fibers, either natural or synthetic, that are engineered to interact with dye molecules in a way that enhances dye uptake, distribution, and fastness. In practice, dyefibers may incorporate dye-reactive functionalities into the polymer backbone, embed dye carriers within the fiber matrix, or support surface chemistries that attract and fix dye species during processing. The result is several potential benefits over conventional fibers, including more efficient dyeing, improved color uniformity, and reduced dye effluent.

Production methods vary. One approach is copolymerization to include dye-reactive monomers that form covalent bonds with dye molecules during application. Another is post-spinning surface functionalization, where reactive groups are grafted onto existing fibers. A third strategy uses encapsulated or bound dye within microcapsules or porous domains that release dye during controlled stages of dyeing or wear.

Key properties of dyefibers include higher dye affinity, faster exhaustion, and improved washfastness and lightfastness. Depending on the chemistry, dyefibers can also offer tailored shade depth and more uniform penetration. Some designs aim to reduce water usage and energy demand in dyeing by enabling near-quantitative dye uptake at lower temperatures.

Applications span consumer textiles, athletic and outdoor fabrics, upholstery, and medical textiles, where color stability and process efficiency are valuable. Environmental impact varies with the chosen chemistry; life-cycle considerations emphasize potential reductions in effluent alongside the need for safe manufacturing practices and end-of-life management.
