duftite

Duftite is a rare mineral composed of hydrated lead copper arsenate. Its chemical formula is Pb2Cu(AsO4)2(OH). Duftite typically occurs as small, botryoidal, or reniform aggregates, often with a drusy or crystalline surface. The color of duftite can vary, ranging from green to blue-green, and occasionally yellow or brown, depending on the presence of impurities.

This mineral is found in the oxidized zones of some lead-copper deposits, particularly in arid or semi-arid environments. It forms through the alteration of primary sulfide minerals like olivenite, azurite, and malachite. Duftite is often associated with other secondary minerals such as adamite, scorodite, and limonite.

The type locality for duftite is the Tsumeb Mine in Namibia. Significant occurrences have also been reported in other locations worldwide, including Australia, Chile, and the United States. Due to its rarity and often attractive coloration, duftite is of interest to mineral collectors. While not commercially significant, its presence indicates hydrothermal activity and the weathering of mineral-rich ore bodies. Microscopically, duftite crystals are often acicular or prismatic. The mineral is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of around 3.5 to 4. It is brittle and will break with a conchoidal fracture.
