Daltense is a constructed language developed for a fictional world-building project. It is presented as the native tongue of the Dalten people who inhabit the Dalten Islands in the northern archipelago of the imagined realm of Eldoria. The language was designed by linguist Mara Vance and first described in notes published in 2012. In the narrative, Daltense serves as a medium for everyday conversation, literature, and ceremonial speech, with its use shaped by imagined social change and contact with neighboring languages.

Phonology and writing: Daltense has a compact phoneme inventory. Consonants include p, t, k, m, n, s, l, and r; vowels are a, e, i, o, u, with stress typically on the penultimate syllable. The writing system uses a Latin-based alphabet with diacritics and some digraphs; a ceremonial indigenous runic script appears in lore.

Grammar: The basic word order is subject–verb–object in simple clauses. Nouns lack grammatical gender and do not carry obligatory number marking; plural meaning is expressed by determiners or context. Verbs mark aspect rather than tense, and mood and evidentiality are indicated with particles and auxiliary verbs.

Dialect and status: Two main dialects are described—Northern Daltense and Southern Daltense—having high mutual intelligibility but distinct phonetic traits. In the fictional setting, Daltense is endangered due to urban migration and language shift, with in-universe efforts toward revitalization through education, media, and community programs.
