Dualitat, or duality, is a concept describing the existence or interaction of two fundamental parts or aspects that together form a whole. In many disciplines, these parts are complementary, opposing, or interdependent, and a full understanding of the system requires considering both sides.

In philosophy, dualitat often appears as dualism, the view that reality consists of two distinct kinds of substances or principles, such as mind and matter. Other traditions emphasize unity, but dualistic frameworks stress persistent differences between opposing elements.

In mathematics and logic, dualitat denotes paired structures that reflect each other under a defined transformation. Examples include dual vector spaces, primal–dual optimization problems, and projective or categorical dualities, where theorems about one structure have parallel formulations for its dual.

In physics, wave–particle duality describes how light and matter can exhibit both wave-like and particle-like properties. More broadly, dualities appear in theories such as gauge theory and string theory, where seemingly different descriptions capture the same physical content.

In linguistics, the dualitat of patterning refers to language’s two-level organization: a large set of meaningless sounds that combine to form meaningful units such as morphemes and words. This idea is used in information theory and cognitive science as well.

Outside formal disciplines, dualitat is a useful shorthand for pairs of related forces, conditions, or dimensions—such as order and chaos, structure and function, or potential and actuality. Analysts caution that relying on binary pairs can obscure complexity and context.
