Dryout is the process or result of removing moisture from a material, space, or system, or of becoming dry. The term is used across disciplines to describe both intentional drying operations and the natural or accidental loss of moisture.

In construction and building maintenance, dryout denotes the phase after water intrusion during which moisture must be removed to prevent mold, wood rot, and material damage. Drying plans commonly combine removal of standing water with dehumidification, ventilation, and controlled heat, and rely on moisture measurements to determine completion. Techniques include desiccant or refrigerant dehumidification and air-assisted evaporation, with progress tracked by moisture meters and humidity readings.

Outside construction, dryout appears in electronics, energy systems, and agriculture. In electronics, moisture removal after exposure is accomplished with desiccants, air drying, or vacuum drying. In energy and industrial equipment, dryout can describe a loss of cooling or lubrication that exposes surfaces to overheating. In agriculture, dryout describes soil moisture depletion that stresses plants and reduces yields.

Moisture assessment is central to dryout management, using measures such as moisture content, relative humidity, or electrical resistance. Effective strategies depend on material properties, safety considerations, and environmental conditions to avoid damage or health risks, and to restore normal operation or production.
