Dreamproducing refers to deliberate efforts to influence or generate dream content. In academic and popular usage, it covers both the manipulation of dreams during sleep and the construction of dream-like narratives in waking contexts. The practice draws on components of dream incubation, lucid dreaming, and dream therapy.

During sleep, dreamproducing seeks to bias dream content through targeted memory reactivation (TMR) cues, sensory stimuli presented during REM sleep, or pre-sleep cognitive priming. Techniques include presenting sounds, odors, or tactile cues linked to prior learning or images; simultaneous cognitive suggestions; and, in research settings, noninvasive brain stimulation such as tDCS or TMS aimed at modulating REM activity or cortical networks involved in dreaming.

Pharmacological and neuromodulatory approaches have been reported to alter dream vividness, emotional tone, or recall in some individuals, though effects are inconsistent and not universally replicable.

In waking practice, dreamproducing can involve guided imagery, hypnosis, journaling, or creative exercises designed to evoke dream-like scenarios for art, writing, or problem-solving. In clinical contexts, related techniques include image rehearsal therapy for nightmare reduction, which uses rehearsal of more adaptive dream content to change nocturnal experiences.

Research on dreamproducing is exploratory and often controversial due to methodological challenges and ethical considerations about manipulating unconscious experiences. Key questions concern the durability of induced content, the specificity of cues, and potential negative effects such as distress or altered sleep quality.
