A drag chain, also known as an energy chain or cable carrier, is a modular guide designed to protect and organize cables and hoses connected to moving machinery. It consists of hinged links that form a track along which cables can bend and travel. End pieces and mounting channels secure the chain to the machine, and the chain can be loaded with cables through detachable links or openable sections.

Purpose and use

Drag chains provide controlled bending radii, prevent cable snagging, and reduce wear on bundles of cables and hoses. They are used in applications with repetitive or long-distance motion, such as robotic arms, CNC machines, packaging equipment, and automated production lines. By grouping and guiding cables, the chains help maintain cable alignment, simplify maintenance, and extend service life.

Drag chains are available in plastic and metal versions. Plastic variants are commonly made from polyamide (nylon) materials with or without lubricants, offering corrosion resistance and quieter operation. Metal chains (aluminum or steel) are used in harsh or high-load environments. Chains come in a range of inner heights and widths to accommodate different cable bundles and fill rates; many designs feature removable or hinged links for easy cable insertion and maintenance. Some chains include enclosed covers or internal separators to keep media distinct.

Installation considerations

Selecting the appropriate chain involves accounting for the maximum travel distance, required bend radius, cable fill percentage, and operating environment. Proper installation uses guides or rails, correct end supports, and adequate strain relief. It is important to respect minimum bend radii to avoid cable damage and to dimension the chain for anticipated acceleration and dynamic loads.

Advantages and limitations

Advantages include improved protection from abrasion, organized cabling, easier replacements, and the ability to accommodate multiple cables and hoses. Limitations can include accumulation of dust or moisture in some plastics and reduced performance under extreme loads if not properly sized.
