Doublereplacement, also known as double displacement or double decomposition, is a type of chemical reaction where two ionic compounds in a solution exchange cations to form two new compounds. The general form of a doublereplacement reaction can be represented as:

where A and C are cations, and B and D are anions. This type of reaction is also known as a metathesis reaction. For example, consider the reaction between silver nitrate (AgNO3) and sodium chloride (NaCl) in an aqueous solution:

In this reaction, silver (Ag+) from silver nitrate exchanges places with sodium (Na+) from sodium chloride, resulting in the formation of silver chloride (AgCl), which is a solid precipitate, and sodium nitrate (NaNO3), which remains in solution.
