Dorsoventral is an anatomical directional term describing the axis from the back (dorsal) to the belly (ventral) of an organism. It is used to describe the relative positions of structures, planes of section, and patterns of development. The term applies across many animal groups, though the specific orientation and the mechanisms that establish it can vary with different body plans.

In humans and other vertebrates, the dorsal surface is the back, the ventral surface is the front or belly. When describing anatomy, the dorsoventral axis runs from the back toward the abdomen, and is distinct from the left–right and cranial–caudal (head-to-tail) axes. The dorsoventral orientation is important for locating organs and tissues, such as the back muscles being on the dorsal aspect and the chest and abdominal organs on the ventral aspect.

Dorsoventral patterning is also a central concept in embryology. It refers to the signaling processes that establish dorsal versus ventral cell fates along the body axis. In vertebrates, dorsal identities are promoted where BMP signaling is inhibited by antagonists, contributing to neural tissue formation, while ventral regions receive signaling that promotes epidermal or ventral mesodermal fates. In invertebrates such as Drosophila, a nuclear gradient of the Dorsal transcription factor specifies ventral cell fates, illustrating how different organisms use the dorsoventral axis to organize body plan and organ development.
