A docking station, or dock, is a peripheral device that provides a fixed set of ports and, in many cases, power to a portable computer, such as a laptop. By connecting the laptop to a dock, a user can quickly convert a mobile device into a desktop workstation, with access to multiple monitors, peripherals, and network connectivity through a single link.

Docks come in model-specific and universal varieties. Model-specific docks are designed to work with particular laptop families and rely on dedicated docking connectors. Universal docks connect via high-bandwidth interfaces such as USB-C or Thunderbolt and can support a range of devices. Docks may be bus-powered, drawing power from the host, or self-powered, using their own power adapter to deliver higher charging and device support.

Common features include video outputs (HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA), USB ports (USB-A and USB-C), Ethernet, audio jacks, and sometimes card readers. Many docks also provide power delivery to charge the laptop while connected. Multi-monitor support is common, but the number and resolution of displays depend on the dock’s bandwidth and the host computer’s capabilities.

Use cases include transforming a portable computer into a fixed workstation at a desk, enabling rapid disconnect and reattachment for mobility, and simplifying cable management. When selecting a dock, considerations include compatibility with the host device, supported display configurations, power delivery needs, and driver requirements. USB-C and Thunderbolt-based docks are currently the most versatile for cross-brand compatibility.
