Dobbeltbilleder, also known as diplopia, is a visual disturbance where an individual perceives two images of a single object. These images may be side-by-side, one above the other, or at an angle, and can occur in one or both eyes. When present in only one eye, it is termed monocular diplopia, while if it disappears when one eye is covered, it is known as binocular diplopia.

The causes of dobbeltbilleder are varied. Binocular diplopia often arises from misalignment of the eyes, which can be due to issues with the muscles controlling eye movement, nerves that transmit signals to these muscles, or the brain regions responsible for coordinating vision. Conditions such as strabismus (misaligned eyes), cranial nerve palsies, myasthenia gravis, or thyroid eye disease can lead to this type of double vision.

Monocular diplopia, which persists even when one eye is covered, usually stems from problems within the eye itself. This can include refractive errors like astigmatism, cataracts, or conditions affecting the cornea or retina.

Diagnosis involves a comprehensive eye examination, including assessment of visual acuity, eye muscle function, and neurological evaluation. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. For binocular diplopia, it might involve vision therapy, prism glasses to realign images, or surgery to correct eye muscle imbalances. For monocular diplopia, corrective lenses, cataract surgery, or treatment of corneal or retinal conditions may be necessary.
