Diving petrels are a group of seabirds belonging to the family Procellariidae, characterized by their diving abilities and unique adaptations for underwater foraging. They are found in the Southern Ocean and the waters surrounding Antarctica, with some species also occurring in the North Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans.

There are three species of diving petrels: the common diving petrel (Pelecanoides urinatrix), the South Georgia diving petrel (Pelecanoides georgicus), and the Australian diving petrel (Pelecanoides magellani). These birds are medium-sized, with a wingspan ranging from 60 to 70 cm, and a body length of about 30 cm. They have a distinctive appearance, with a blackish-brown upperparts, a white belly, and a white head with a black cap.

Diving petrels are known for their exceptional diving abilities, capable of reaching depths of over 100 meters. They use their wings to propel themselves underwater, with their feet acting as rudders. Their long, slender bills are adapted for catching small fish and squid, which make up the majority of their diet.

Breeding occurs during the austral summer, with colonies typically found on remote islands and rocky outcrops. The common diving petrel is the most widespread and abundant species, with an estimated global population of over 10 million pairs. The South Georgia diving petrel and the Australian diving petrel have smaller populations, with the latter being the most endangered species due to habitat loss and competition with commercial fisheries.

Conservation efforts are underway to protect diving petrel populations, with a focus on maintaining their breeding habitats and reducing bycatch in fisheries. Research continues to uncover more about their behavior, ecology, and population trends, contributing to the development of effective conservation strategies.
