Divertikulumissa refers to the presence of diverticula, which are small, bulging pouches that can form in the lining of the digestive system. These pouches are most commonly found in the wall of the colon, particularly in the sigmoid colon, but can also occur in other parts of the gastrointestinal tract. The development of diverticula is known as diverticulosis.

The exact cause of diverticulosis is not fully understood, but it is thought to be related to increased pressure within the colon. Factors such as a low-fiber diet, chronic constipation, and aging are believed to contribute to its formation. In many cases, diverticulosis is asymptomatic and discovered incidentally during medical examinations for other conditions.

When diverticula become inflamed or infected, this condition is called diverticulitis. Symptoms of diverticulitis can include abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and changes in bowel habits. While most cases of diverticulitis are mild and can be treated with dietary changes and antibiotics, severe cases may lead to complications such as abscess formation, perforation of the colon, or fistula development, sometimes requiring surgical intervention. Diagnosis is typically made through imaging tests such as CT scans or colonoscopies. Treatment for asymptomatic diverticulosis often involves dietary recommendations, including increasing fiber intake and fluid consumption, to help prevent the development of diverticulitis.
