Divertikulitisze refers to the inflammation or infection of diverticula, which are small, bulging pouches that can form in the lining of the digestive system. These pouches, called diverticula, most commonly develop in the lower part of the large intestine, known as the colon. When one or more of these diverticula become inflamed or infected, the condition is called diverticulitis.

The exact cause of diverticulitis is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to increased pressure within the colon, which can lead to the formation of diverticula. Factors such as a low-fiber diet, obesity, lack of physical activity, smoking, and certain medications like NSAIDs have been associated with an increased risk.

Symptoms of diverticulitis can vary but often include abdominal pain, typically in the lower left side, fever, nausea, vomiting, and changes in bowel habits such as constipation or diarrhea. In some cases, more severe complications can arise, including abscess formation, bowel obstruction, or perforation of the colon, which can lead to peritonitis, a serious infection of the abdominal lining.

Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination, medical history, and imaging tests such as a CT scan or ultrasound. Treatment depends on the severity of the condition and may range from dietary changes and antibiotics for mild cases to hospitalization and surgery for severe or complicated diverticulitis. A high-fiber diet is often recommended to help prevent future episodes of diverticulitis.
