Divertikulitis is a medical condition characterized by inflammation or infection of diverticula, which are small, bulging pouches that can form in the lining of the digestive system. These pouches, known as diverticula, most commonly occur in the lower part of the large intestine, specifically the colon. The presence of these pouches without inflammation is called diverticulosis. Diverticulitis develops when one or more of these diverticula become inflamed or infected.

The exact cause of diverticulitis is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to increased pressure within the colon, potentially due to a low-fiber diet, aging, obesity, and lack of physical activity. When stool or other matter becomes trapped in a diverticulum, it can lead to a blockage, causing inflammation and infection. Symptoms can vary in severity and may include abdominal pain, often in the lower left side, fever, nausea, vomiting, and changes in bowel habits such as constipation or diarrhea.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, medical history, and imaging tests such as a CT scan or ultrasound. Treatment depends on the severity of the condition. Mild cases may be managed with rest, a liquid or low-fiber diet, and antibiotics. More severe cases, or those with complications like abscesses or perforations, may require hospitalization, intravenous antibiotics, and in some instances, surgery to remove the affected part of the colon. Following a high-fiber diet after recovery is often recommended to help prevent future episodes.
