Diszperzív is a Hungarian term that translates to "dispersive" in English. It is most commonly used in the context of physics and chemistry to describe phenomena where a medium separates different wavelengths or frequencies of a wave. This separation occurs because the speed of the wave is dependent on its wavelength or frequency.

In optics, dispersion is responsible for phenomena like the formation of a rainbow. When white light, which is composed of various wavelengths, passes through a prism or water droplets, each wavelength is refracted at a slightly different angle. This causes the white light to split into its constituent colors, creating a spectrum. The refractive index of a material often varies with wavelength, leading to this dispersive effect.

In physics, dispersion can also refer to the spreading of a wave packet as it propagates. This happens in systems where the group velocity, which describes the speed of the overall wave packet, differs from the phase velocity, which describes the speed of individual wave crests.
