Distortsioonid, in the context of audio and signal processing, refer to unwanted alterations in a signal's waveform. These changes can manifest as a deviation from the original intended sound or data, leading to a perception of degradation or modification. There are several types of distortions, each with its own cause and effect.

Harmonic distortion is one of the most common. It occurs when a non-linear system generates new frequency components that are integer multiples of the original signal's fundamental frequency. These new frequencies are called harmonics. For instance, a pure sine wave subjected to harmonic distortion will produce a more complex waveform containing the original sine wave plus its second, third, and higher harmonics.

Intermodulation distortion (IMD) is another type. It arises when two or more signals pass through a non-linear system, creating new frequencies that are sums and differences of the original frequencies and their harmonics. This can lead to a muddier or less clear sound.

Clipping is a form of distortion that occurs when the amplitude of a signal exceeds the maximum limit that a system can handle. The peaks and troughs of the waveform are flattened, resulting in a squared-off shape. This is often heard as a harsh, gritty sound.

Other forms of distortion exist, such as saturation, which is a gentler form of clipping often associated with analog equipment, and aliasing, which occurs in digital systems when sampling rates are too low, causing high frequencies to be incorrectly represented as lower frequencies. Understanding and controlling distortions are crucial in various fields, including music production, telecommunications, and scientific measurement, to maintain signal integrity or achieve specific sonic effects.
