dissipatively

Dissipatively is an adverb that describes a process or action that results in dissipation. Dissipation refers to the process by which energy, or some other quantity, is dispersed or spread out, often irreversibly, into a more disordered form. In physics, this typically involves the conversion of ordered energy into thermal energy, which is then lost to the surroundings.

In thermodynamics, processes are often described as dissipative when they involve friction, viscosity, electrical resistance, or other mechanisms that convert useful energy into heat. For example, a car's engine dissipatively converts chemical energy from fuel into kinetic energy of the car, but also into heat and sound. A pendulum swinging in air eventually stops due to air resistance, which dissipatively converts its mechanical energy into thermal energy.

The concept of dissipatively is also relevant in other fields. In economics, it can refer to the wasteful spending of resources. In biology, it might describe the loss of energy from an ecosystem. In general, anything that causes a system to lose order or useful energy can be considered to be acting dissipatively. The presence of dissipative forces often leads to the approach of a system towards equilibrium, where energy is maximally spread out and no further work can be extracted.
