Disreputability is the quality or state of being disreputable—the lack or loss of general esteem resulting from perceptions of dishonorable or improper conduct by a person or organization. The term is used in sociology, ethics, and journalism to describe reputational harm and its social consequences.

Disreputability can arise from a range of actions or associations, including unethical behavior, criminal activity, corruption, fraud, or ties to disreputable groups. The boundary between disreputable and merely controversial is often subjective and culturally conditioned, depending on norms, context, and the credibility of sources.

Social mechanisms such as media coverage, online discourse, and social networks can amplify perceptions and lead to lasting stigma. Consequences may include diminished trust, damaged employment prospects, strained personal relationships, and loss of professional licenses or organizational affiliations.

Responses to disreputability typically involve accountability, remediation, or reputation management, though repairing a damaged reputation can be difficult and lengthy. The concept is distinct from legality: something disreputable is not necessarily illegal, and illegal activity does not automatically incur social disrepute.
