Displaykontraster, often translated as display contrast, refers to the difference in luminance between the brightest and darkest areas of a display screen. This difference is a crucial factor in the perceived quality and clarity of an image. A higher contrast ratio means that the display can show a wider range of tones, from deep blacks to bright whites, resulting in more detailed and vibrant visuals.

The contrast ratio is typically expressed as a ratio, such as 1000:1. This means that the brightest white the display can produce is 1000 times brighter than the darkest black. Different display technologies have varying capabilities in achieving high contrast. For instance, OLED displays are known for their exceptional contrast ratios because each pixel can be individually turned off, achieving true black. LCD displays, on the other hand, rely on a backlight that is always on, which can limit their ability to produce deep blacks and therefore lower their contrast ratios compared to OLED.

A low contrast ratio can lead to washed-out images, where dark areas appear grayish and the distinction between colors is diminished.
