These defects are crucial in understanding the mechanical properties of crystalline materials, particularly their plastic deformation. When a material is stressed beyond its elastic limit, dislocations move through the crystal lattice, allowing planes of atoms to slip past each other. This slip is the fundamental mechanism behind plastic deformation. The ease with which dislocations move influences the material's strength and ductility.

Dislocations can interact with each other, and their movement can be impeded by other crystal defects, such as grain boundaries or impurities. These interactions are important in strengthening mechanisms like work hardening, where plastic deformation introduces more dislocations, making further deformation more difficult. Studying dislocations helps material scientists and engineers to control and improve the properties of metals, ceramics, and semiconductors.
