Discrimin is not a widely recognized standalone term in major reference works. In most contexts it appears as a truncated form or informal shorthand for related terms such as discriminant, discrimination, or discriminator. Because of this ambiguity, the precise meaning of discrimin is usually inferred from context and the surrounding language.

In mathematics, the closest established term is discriminant. The discriminant is a quantity derived from the coefficients of a polynomial that gives information about the nature of its roots. For a quadratic polynomial ax^2 + bx + c, the discriminant is D = b^2 − 4ac, and its value indicates whether the roots are real and distinct, real and repeated, or complex. The concept generalizes to higher-degree polynomials and to linear and quadratic forms, and it plays a role in algebraic geometry as a measure of degeneracy of a family of objects.

In other domains, related terms carry distinct meanings. Discrimination in social sciences refers to unfair or prejudicial treatment of individuals or groups based on characteristics such as race, gender, age, or religion. Discriminant, a term used in statistics and signal processing, also denotes functions that separate or distinguish data categories.
