Disbinding refers to the process of separating the individual sheets or leaves from a bound book or document. This is typically done to repair the book, extract specific pages for preservation or reproduction, or to prepare the material for re-binding in a different format. In conservation and archival work, disbinding is a delicate operation that requires careful handling to avoid damaging the paper, ink, or any other components of the original binding.

The method of disbinding depends on the type of binding. For case bindings, where the text block is sewn or glued to a cover, the spine might need to be carefully cut or separated. For historical bindings, which may be sewn with strong threads or even attached with adhesives like paste, specialized tools such as scalpels or bone folders are used to gently loosen the attachments without tearing the paper. The goal is to remove the binding structure while keeping each leaf intact and in its original order.

Once disbound, individual sheets can be cleaned, repaired, or flattened. This process can be essential for undertaking complex conservation treatments or for digitizing the content of a fragile or damaged book. After the necessary work is completed on the individual leaves, they can be reassembled and re-bound, either in their original style or a new binding chosen for durability or aesthetic reasons. In some cases, disbinding may be a precursor to microfilming or digital scanning projects where the book is deconstructed for efficient processing.
